The INSTAR Film Festival is an annual event organized by the Hannah Arendt Institute of Artivism (INSTAR), a collective founded and directed by Cuban artist Tania Bruguera. It is a film exhibition that supports independent production on an international scale, especially in countries where freedom of expression and creation is threatened. The festival favors audiovisuals with daring aesthetic and thematic approaches, as well as hybrid pieces that explore new paths in filmmaking.

El primer festival tuvo lugar en La Habana durante diciembre de 2019 y fue dirigido por la actriz y escritora Lynn Cruz. Luego del hiato que provocó la pandemia, se reanudó el evento a finales de 2021. En aquella ocasión se desarrolló de manera online en la plataforma Festhome, bajo la curaduría de José Luis Aparicio, quien está al frente del proyecto desde entonces. La tercera edición, desarrollada durante julio de 2022 en la Documenta Fifteen de Kassel, Alemania, consistió en la exhibición “Tierra sin imágenes” / “Land without images”, la que se convertiría en la mayor retrospectiva de cine cubano alternativo realizada hasta la fecha.

In addition to screenings, the festival organizes workshops, debates, masterclasses, and exhibitions of expanded cinema, as well as the presentation of the P.M. Awards, INSTAR's fund to support the production of independent Cuban cinema. Among the most relevant guests from previous editions are filmmakers Milo Rau, Ishtar Yasin, Alonso Ruizpalacios, Alejandro Fadel, Heidi Hassan, Alejandro Brugués, and Miguel Coyula.
